Nothing But The Best “The highly-acclaimed biting social

WORKING AT A TOP ESTATE AGENCY for wealthy Mr Horton (Harry Andrews), James "Jimmy" Brewster (Alan Bates: Far From The Madding Crowd; The Go-Between) believes he can shed his working class background and achieve money and respectability by enlisting the help of Charlie Prince (Denholm Elliott: A Room With A View; Raiders of the Lost Ark) whom, although born to a wealthy family, has fallen from grace and is desperate for extra cash.

Although loosely dating switchboard operator Nadine (Lucinda Curtis), James has set his sights upon his boss's lovely daughter Ann (Millicent Martin: Alfie; Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines), who is currently walking out with aristocratic Hugh Langham (James Villiers). Ann would assure James a place in society.

Fending off the unwanted attentions of his middle-aged landlady Zena March (Pauline Delaney), James manages to persuade her to allow him to share his rooms with Charlie, who used to work at Hortons but left under a cloud.

Good at wheeling, dealing and spotting opportunities for advancement, James uses his wit and charm to set up situations to impress both his boss and his boss's clients. The disreputable Charlie is becoming more demanding and James, although beginning to move in the right circles, is losing patience. Things are looking up and he is prepared to do whatever it takes to go further. Nothing will stand in his way.

Finally Ann is hooked and James has established an upper-class network. But a shocking incident threatens to bring his world crashing down around him.

Nothing But The Best is an amusing, quirky and intriguing vision of the Sixties with a talented cast playing very tongue-in-cheek. Great to see the delightful Millicent Martin proving her worth. Millicent also sings the title song Nothing But The Best, with music by Ron Grainer and lyrics by Frederic Raphael.

Nothing But The Best reflects views and values of the time and also features: Godfrey Quigley as Fred Coates; Avis Landon as Mrs Horton; Alison Leggatt as Mrs Brewster; and Nigel Stock as Ferris.
